How to
study Gary Ewer's Easy Music Theory
-Gary
Ewer-
When I designed Easy
Music Theory, I wanted to create a course that would be
comprehensive and fun at the same time. I wanted it to be
ideal for beginners, yet also serve as a useful resource for
students with previous training. And above all, I wanted to
make sure that my course would clearly and concisely show
how music works. But what can you do as a student to get the
most out of your learning experience and guarantee success?
Follow these important pieces of advice:
- Pace yourself -
trying to complete more than one lesson per day will not
provide you with the necessary time to practice the
concepts. Take your time - limit your sessions to an hour
or less per day. Ironically, if you take your time, Easy
Music Theory will actually dramatically decrease the time
it takes to gain a firm understanding of musical
rudiments.
- Always begin by
watching the video for the lesson you are studying, and
you may find it beneficial to go back and watch the video
several times as you proceed through the lesson. Every
time you watch it, your understanding of that lesson's
concepts will solidify and strengthen.
- Do not skip a
lesson. Even if you think you already understand the
material to be covered by a certain lesson, complete the
work!
- Your understanding
of most of music theory will depend on how well you
understand scales. So try this: once you have completed
Lesson 8, write five major scales every day. After Lesson
9, use key signatures. After Lesson 12, write ten scales
per day, five major and five minor. Do this until you
know all of your scales, complete with key signatures.
You will be amazed at how quickly you will grasp many
concepts such as intervals, triads, inversions, cadences,
modes and clefs by having a firm understanding of your
scales.
- As you progress
through the course, try downloading the free articles we
offer. They are free only to those who have purchased the
Easy Music Theory CD-ROM.
- Play a musical
instrument, or take singing lessons. Trying to make sense
of theory without being directly involved in
music-making just doesn't make sense.
- And most of all...
if you find yourself becoming irritable, or things just
aren't making sense... take a break! You'll reap the
benefits of this course by approaching it with an alert
mind and a good attitude. And if there is something you
simply can't understand, don't toss the CD away! Write
the EMT Forum and I'd be happy to clear up any issue.
DON'T GIVE UP!
Remember - music
theory really can be fun, and it really is easy, if you pace
yourself and complete every lesson.
I'd love to hear how
you are doing - Feel free to write me directly at
easy@musictheory.halifax.ns.ca
Best
wishes!
-Gary
